Le son unique et original de Jazz en Voix
découle d'une rencontre entre une vocaliste attirée par le jazz, Florence Tu Hong et par un musicien passionné par l'arrangement, le contrebassiste Éric Le Cardinal. Avec la découverte de Manhattan Transfert, puis des New York Voices, l'idée s'imposa à eux de créer un groupe de jazz vocal polyphonique.
Ainsi naquit le groupe vocal Scatsy en 1990 composé de 3 chanteuses et d'une rythmique piano-contrebasse-batterie.
Mais la passion est sans limite, et le rêve d'un grand ensemble jazz vocal les conduit à démarrer en 1992 un premier ensemble Jazz en Voix à Pertuis.
La formule "chorale jazz" correspond à une demande, et un second groupe est créé sur Puyricard en 1995 suivi d'un autre à Carpentras 6 mois plus tard. La grande idée fut de faire fonctionner ces groupes en réseau, avec le même répertoire, des rencontres régulières et tous les concerts en commun.
C'est ce choix qui détermine le sens de l'ensemble Jazz en Voix. En 1997 Jazz en Voix se produit en concert à Vaison-la-Romaine dans le cadre du festival Chorijazz, organisé par à Chœur Joie.
L'année suivante Florence Tu Hong démarre un nouvel ensemble à Paris, au CISP Maurice Ravel, puis se retrouve en 1999 à la tête de deux groupes parisiens.
Pendant les trois années suivantes Jazz en Voix cultive l'événement de rencontres nord-sud, avec des concerts en commun dans les deux régions, allant jusqu'à présenter 100 choristes sur scène.
Depuis 2003, après l'arrêt des groupes parisiens, l'ensemble Jazz en Voix est présent sur 3 villes : Marseille, Aix-enProvence et Pertuis .
Le répertoire repose sur 4 axes : le jazz, la bossa nova, la chanson française et le gospel. Les arrangements exclusifs d'Éric Le Cardinal font appel à toutes les ressources héritées du jazz moderne et de l'écriture classique (voicing modaux, fugue et contrepoint, écriture big-band) mais sont également ouverts aux influences du rock mélodique des Beatles, Croby Stills Nash and Young ainsi qu'à la pratique des "boucles vocales" chères à Bobby Mc Ferrin.
Florence Tu Hong, qui intervient comme soliste apporte un ciment à l'ensemble, galvanisant le groupe par son interprétation profonde de thèmes en solo accompagnée par le chœur, ainsi que ses interventions en scats virtuoses.
Ce cocktail magique a pour qualité d'allier la richesse harmonique, le swing et l'improvisation à la dynamique des musiques actuelles. Les choristes se produisent a cappella, sans partition, et tout le monde s'accorde à dire qu'une formidable énergie se dégage de l'ensemble, en même temps qu'un grand plaisir communicatif.
